Nonprofit Explorer

Nonprofit Explorer offers a financial snapshot of local and national nonprofit organizations and foundations, including revenue & expenses and executive salaries.  Using this data you can discover

  • If your new board prospect is already serving on other boards
  • what boards local individuals serve on
  • the salaries of nonprofit executives

Quick and easy to use, the Nonprofit Explorer provides easy access to 990 & 990pf data from between 2012 and 2017 that has long been difficult to access and use.  The database includes almost 616,000 tax-exempt organizations.  Small organizations filing a Form 990N “e-Postcard” are not included.

Data Sources

County Health Rankings & Roadmaps ranks the health of nearly every US county.  The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation collaborates with the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute to bring this program to cities, counties and states across the nation.

For nonprofits working with, or needing access to, data in the United States, Data USA, provides free, open source data that is already packaged into comprehensive visualizations.  The M.I.T. Media Lab with support from Deloitte, has accessed years of federal government, state and city data and is making it available free of charge at the DATA USA website.

Data Digest, DataArts’ e-newsletter, will provide you with periodic updates on the system, new tools and resources, as well as news and information on field research, national trends, and local success stories for data-driven management in the cultural sector.  Visit the DataArts website and sign up for their newsletter.
