Background:
Would you like to be a part of the opening crew for the first major public zoological park to be built within the United States in over 30 years?

Sacramento Zoo is currently designing a new zoo on a 75-acre site located within the city of Elk Grove, California. The new zoo will feature interactive habitats and experiences in the first phase of development focused on animals of Africa. It will also include elements such as themed dining and overnight tented camps. The new site will serve as a conservation hub for species like thick-billed parrots, giant garter snakes, and okapi. Most importantly, the sum of these experiences will educate and inspire our guests about wildlife both within California and around the globe and is expected to reach more than a million visitors per year.

The Sacramento Zoo is seeking a dynamic, dedicated, and professional individual to identify and implement a variety of community engagement opportunities throughout the region as our team works toward a new zoo for the Greater Sacramento Region and beyond.

Competency and Duties Summary:
• Represent the zoo by giving regular talks and presentations about the new zoo to schools, service organizations (Kiwanis, Elk, Moose, Rotary, etc.), and other groups.
• Represent the zoo at various community events (fairs, festivals).
• Identify and create grassroots fundraising opportunities and partner with local neighborhoods, groups, and businesses to organize community fundraisers such as bake sales, spaghetti dinners, raffles, yard sales, and a variety of other grassroot fundraising and outreach efforts.
• Responsible for all aspects of planning and implementation of these new zoo community events including, but not limited to, research, outreach, scheduling, planning, staffing, and follow-up.
• Provide regular reports and updates to the Director of IAM and CEO.
• Accurately input relevant information into the zoo’s database.
• Assist with donor and other new zoo events.
• Assist the IAM team with the new zoo Capital Campaign and other duties as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Job Requirements: 

• Energetic storyteller who can passionately engage diverse audiences about the new zoo
• Creative and resourceful planner
• Writing, editing, and social media skills are a plus.
• Organization and long-range planning skills
• Demonstrated event planning skills
• Confident and comfortable public speaker with experience speaking before varied audiences.
• Bachelor’s degree strongly desired
• Cheerful disposition
• Team player
• Interest in zoos and a predisposition to visit zoological parks when you go on vacation
• Ability to develop and implement “out of the box” ideas to engage the community to build the next great zoo
• Flexibility to frequently attend evening and/or weekend meetings and/or events.
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job will be considered

Certificates and Licenses:
• Valid driver’s license, dependable transportation, current automobile insurance
