Summary
Effie Yeaw Nature Center Educators instill an interest in the environment and natural world, by helping the public understand the cultural, natural and scientific significance of the Lower American River. They do this by highlighting historical, ecological or scientific features of outdoor surroundings through nature walks, educational programs, and kids’ camps. Our Seasonal/Summer/Camp Naturalists and staff lead summer camps and programs for a wide range of ages and in many subjects focusing on natural history, conservation and indigenous culture. This is a part-time, seasonal and temporary position, which may include weekend responsibilities

The Effie Yeaw Nature Center has a reputation for high-quality public and school-based educational programs and camp programs, as well as a wide variety of public programs, led by friendly, knowledgeable staff. For over 46 years, the Naturalists at Effie Yeaw Nature Center (operated by ARNHA) have connected students and the general public with the natural and cultural history of the Lower American River. These camps are conducted within our 100 acre preserve; at unique locations within the Parkway; and in school classrooms and other off-site and field locations.

Compensation:
• This position starts at $14.00/hr.
• EYNC/ARNHA staff are eligible for a discount in the Discovery Store.
• All staff receive access to ongoing professional development and training opportunities, including external certification programs and First Aid/CPR training.

Schedule:
• This position is primarily a week-based role, but may requires some Saturday/Sunday availability.
• Work hours are generally between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm, with some early mornings, evening and night availability required.
• This position is targeted to begin June 1st and conclude mid-August and is considered a seasonal position.
• This position is scheduled for 20 hours per week. Opportunities will exist frequently throughout the summer and may periodically throughout the school year for additional hours, up to 40 hours per week.
• Summer opportunities exist for additional hours on weekdays, supporting school, summer camp and public programs.

 

Qualifications and Job Requirements: 

Responsibilities:
• Present on-site and offsite camp and public programs for children, as well as the general public. Plan and lead full and half-day kids’ summer camps;
• Conduct Nature Area Tours;
• Assist with classroom programs and, when ready, lead each classroom program under the supervision of a naturalist or lead naturalist;
• Assist in animal care and competently handle one or more raptors;
• Assist with the operation of the visitor center as both a receptionist and a Naturalist on Duty (NOD), which will include presenting programs to family groups on weekends;
• Assist with special events – including those on evenings and weekends.

Skills and Knowledge:
• A love for the environment and the ability to share that passion and knowledge with the public.
• Training, work experience or education in a science-related field is helpful; formal or informal education experience is required (Camp, After-school, Pre-K or Child Care programs).
• Must be comfortable making presentations, giving lectures and leading tours.
• Ability to identify and describe points of interests to groups (especially children) in a way that will hold their interest.
• Teaching experience is helpful.
• Patience and tact are a must. Groups of children on a field trip can be challenging to manage/lead.
• Ability to be flexible, level-headed and to make on-the-spot adjustments to a program or schedule.
